Have a Break? - Why not..?

(or "Mobile phones are no longer in fashion")

Some people today say that teenagers have nothing to do. It’s not true. We are totally busy, especially during breaks. To find out the most popular ways of spending 10 to 20 minutes of free time between various lessons, we asked students of 8th – 11th forms to do our questionnaire.

1. What do you usually do during a break?
  • eat
  • play my mobile phone
  • read
  • talk to someone
2. What do you think is the most popular activity during breaks in our gymnasium?
  • eating
  • playing mobile phones
  • reading
  • chatting
3. Do you ever read during breaks?
  • practically always
  • often
  • from time to time
  • never
4. What genres of books do you slike?
  • science fiction
  • adventure stories
  • historical novels
  • serious classical literature
5. Where do you usually read books?
  • at home
  • in public transport
  • during school breaks
  • at lessons

If you have done the questionnaire, you can compare your results with the answers of other students. It is obvious, that mostly students prefer eating during breaks - 45 %, reading books is popular with 35 % of schoolchildren, while 20 % of them like talking to each other between lessons. Surprisingly no one plays mobile phones! Again eating is considered to be the most popular activity during breaks in our gymnasium - 35%, reading and chatting get 30% each and only 5% of students are involved into playing mobile phones. The vast majority of students (60%) admit that they often read during breaks. 35% of teenagers do it form time to time, while only 5% say they never open books or exercise-books between lessons. As for favourite genres of books, 50% of students choose science fiction (mainly American writers), 30% - adventure stories, 15% - historical novels and only 5% admit that they like serious classical literature. Finally we should pay attention to the fact that although reading at home is quite popular - 35%, about half of the students read books during breaks - 45%. 15% of teenagers prefer reading in public transport and only 5% do it at lessons. Students admit it is very difficult for them to find time for reading at home as they have a lot of courses and out-of-school activities.
